Part of what makes this beach so great is it’s right next door to Oneroa Village which is where you’ll find a variety of cafes, restaurants, and boutique shops, making it easy to grab a bite to eat or enjoy a leisurely stroll.
The facilities at Oneroa Beach include public restrooms and picnic areas. For those interested in water activities, kayak and paddleboard rentals are available nearby. When I visit Waiheke Island on a day trip, this is often my beach of choice since it’s so accessible and has everything you need for a relaxing beach day!
2. Little Oneroa Beach

Then of course you’ve got the beautiful bay right there so if the weather is good, don’t miss the chance to go for a swim.
Despite being the furthest winery on the island, the journey to Man O’ War Bay is well worth it. I’ve travelled here both by boat and the summer bus operated by Man O’ War, which takes about 40 minutes, and while both options were fantastic, the bus is definitely the more affordable and accessible choice.

Only accessible by boat, Cactus Bay is a real hidden gem! The beach itself is pretty stunning, with crystal clear water that makes it one of the best beaches in Auckland. It’s a great place for swimming and snorkelling.
Due to its secluded location, you won’t find too many other people here. For those that haven’t got access to a boat, don’t worry, Kayak Waiheke offers a Guided Sea Kayak experience that takes you to Cactus Bay.

Shelly Beach is a quaint little spot on the southern side of Waiheke Island, located in Putaki Bay. True to its name, the beach is lined with shells and it’s a lovely, quiet place that is perfect for those looking for a peaceful retreat away from the more popular beaches.
Swimming at Shelly Beach is best at high tide, at low tide it’s not so great. The beach is sheltered and lined with large pohutakawa trees, providing plenty of shade which is much needed during the summer months. There are also free BBQ facilities here, making it a great spot for a picnic.
While Shelly Beach may not be as scenic or ideal for swimming as some of Waiheke’s other beaches, it’s a good bet if you’re looking for a quieter spot to enjoy the natural beauty of the island.
Getting around Waiheke Island
Once you’re on Waiheke Island, getting around is pretty easy and the best way IMO is using the local bus. The service operated by Auckland Transport connects the main ferry terminals with key destinations, including popular beaches and vineyards. To ride the bus you’ll need an AT HOP card, they don’t accept cash or cards but don’t worry, you can easily grab one of these at the ferry terminal.
For more flexibility, consider renting a car or scooter from one of the rental companies on the island. Taxi services are also available, though they can be expensive, especially if you plan on visiting multiple beaches during your trip.
