Best time to visit Queenstown New Zealand

When it comes to the best time to visit Queenstown it really depends on what you want to get out of your trip. If you’re a keen skier or snowboarder then you’ll definitely want to head to Queenstown when it snows in the winter and even if you’re not, Queenstown is pretty magical in the winter full stop.

The snow on the mountains is gorgeous and everything has a bit of a winter wonderland vibe. In Queenstown, the winter season runs from June until August.

On the flip side, if you travel here in summer you get to go for a dip in the stunning lakes and beaches. In the deep south, the beaches aren’t your typical sand beaches, they are usually stone beaches but still possible to walk on and trust me, the scenery at these beaches is pretty beautiful. Places like Wilsons Bay and Bob’s Cove are the perfect places to enjoy a refreshing swim.

Then what about visiting in autumn and spring? Well in autumn you’ve got all the colours of the red and orange leaves. The weather is still lovely and mild in autumn too so it’s the perfect time to visit if you’re keen on seeing the colourful side of Queenstown. Arrowtown is a must-visit too if you come here in the autumn!

Lastly in Spring, you’ve got a lovely crispness to the air, it’ll be a bit colder than in autumn but the trees and flowers will be starting to bloom. So again you get some beautiful colours coming through the trees.

Overall my favourite time of year to visit Queenstown would have to be autumn. There’s something about the leaves changing colour that is so pretty and the weather isn’t starting to get too cold yet. You also manage to escape the crowds that you tend to get over the summer holidays and then again for the snow season.

Is Queenstown worth visiting?

Absolutely! Queenstown is one of New Zealand’s top tourist destinations so it’s certainly not to be missed.

If the fact that it’s the top tourist destination makes you shiver because you prefer to venture off the beaten track, well, it’s still worth visiting because it’s just that beautiful! You can always visit in the shoulder season when it’s less busy.

Queenstown is known for its stunning lakes, adventurous hikes, gorgeous mountain ranges and of course, delicious local wine. There are plenty of great wine-tasting tours available to make the most of the vineyards in the region.

Planning on travelling solo? There are a ton of awesome things you can do in Queenstown alone.

How many days should you stay in Queenstown?

It really depends on what you want to get out of your trip but I’d say the optimal amount of time in Queenstown is 3-7 days.

If you plan to spend a couple of days skiing then I would say closer to 7 days so that you’ve got time for sightseeing and exploring as well. Then if you aren’t planning on skiing, you can probably get away with a shorter stay.

There are plenty of great day trips you can do from Queenstown as well so factor any of these in when deciding on how long you want your holiday to be.

Is it better to stay in Wanaka or Queenstown?

Again the answer to this question kinda depends on what you want to get out of your trip. Wanaka is a lot quieter and slower-paced than Queenstown. I’d also say it’s less touristy.

I love escaping to Wanaka for a couple of days to recharge when doing a trip to Queenstown, it’s quite a nice way to break up the trip and get the best of both worlds.

If you want to be right in the action then Queenstown is going to be the best place for you to stay. It is also a lot more convenient to stay in Queenstown if you’re not planning on renting a car as you can get to most places on foot.

Conclusion: Best Places to Stay in Queenstown New Zealand

So there you have it – my top picks for the best places to stay in Queenstown, New Zealand.

I hope this has helped and that you’ll consider booking your trip today! Whether youโ€™re into skiing, hiking, or simply enjoying the views from a cozy restaurant, thereโ€™s something for everyone in Queenstown.

If you’ve rented a car and feel like going for a bit of a tiki tour, it’s worth stopping by Omarama. The hot pools here are an attraction in themselves and they’ve way less busy than the famous Onsen hot pools. I would definitely recommend checking them out.
