Why should you visit Rarotonga?

Rarotonga, the main island of the Cook Islands, is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. It’s becoming more and more popular with Kiwis and Aussies thanks to its close proximity but for many other parts of the world, Rarotonga is yet to be explored.

The beaches here are nothing short of spectacular, with crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches that will leave you wanting to return to this incredible island again and again.

Unlike other destinations, Rarotonga maintains a charming small island feel that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a secret paradise. The locals are incredibly warm and welcoming.

And let’s not forget about the weather – Rarotonga boasts a tropical climate, offering warm sunny days for most of the year. So, if you’re longing for a serene escape with stunning beaches, a cosy atmosphere, friendly locals, and perfect weather, Rarotonga is the ultimate island destination for you.

Best time to go to Rarotonga

The best time to visit Rarotonga is during the dry season which runs from April to November. You’ll get awesome weather with lots of sunshine and less humidity – perfect for checking out the island’s gorgeous beaches.

The average temperature hovers at around 26°C. Peak season is considered to be June, July, and August while the shoulder months are April, May, September and October.

December to March is when the island sees increased rainfall and this is when it’s the hottest with temperatures getting up to 30°C. Showers are usually isolated to the morning or afternoon and tend to be brief tropical downpours. Humidity is also higher at this time of year.

If seeing humpback whales is on your bucket list then plan to visit Rarotonga between July and October. This is when the whales swim up to warmer waters from Antarctica.

Best things to do in Rarotonga

1. Cross Island Walk

Embark on a breathtaking hike through Rarotonga’s lush interior on the Cross Island Walk. This trek offers stunning panoramic views of the island and is a must-do.

It’s a challenging hike up Te Rua Manga, also known as The Needle, but it’s incredibly rewarding once you reach the top. The views are pretty breathtaking, you’ll know you’re near the top once you reach the ropes for scrambling up the rocks.

The locals warn about doing this walk after a lot of rain as it can get muddy so aim to do this on a dry day. Another tip is to walk from north to south so that you finish at the waterfall and can cool off with a swim.

2. Snorkelling

IMG 7338

There are plenty of amazing snorkelling spots in Rarotonga that offer crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life.

Some of my favourites include Black Rock Beach, to the right of the Rarotongan Resort and the Fruits of Rarotonga – you can hire snorkel gear here too if you don’t have some already.

3. Book a cultural show

An island night show is an absolute must for immersing yourself in the Rarotongan culture. I’ve attended an Island Night Show every time I’ve visited Rarotonga and it never disappoints.

Enjoy traditional dance performances, feast on delicious local cuisine, and experience the warmth and hospitality of the Cook Islands. I would recommend booking the Highland Paradise Island Night, it was a little on the pricey side but the buffet was delicious and the show was fantastic.

The show at Te Vara Nui Village is also a great option, located in Muri Beach with an over-water night show and buffet dinner.

4. Swim with Turtles

Get up close and personal with gentle sea turtles by taking a guided swimming tour. Snorkel alongside these majestic creatures in their natural habitat and create unforgettable memories.

I would recommend booking with Charlotte Piho Tours, we did this tour on my most recent trip to Rarotonga and loved it!

5. Kayak in Muri Lagoon

IMG 0596

Enjoy paddling through the tranquil waters of Muri Lagoon for a peaceful and scenic experience. Keep an eye on the current as it can be strong in certain areas. If you’re not a confident kayaker then I would probably stick to Muri Beach as this is a bit more sheltered.

It’s also possible to go stand–up paddle boarding at Muri Beach, we did a night tour with light-up paddle boards and it was an awesome experience.

IMO Muri Lagoon and Muri Beach are one of the most beautiful spots on the island so plan to spend at least a day here soaking up the scenery.

6. Go fishing

The fishing in Rarotonga is awesome and exhilarating, offering the chance to catch some impressive fish in the island’s abundant waters. Booking a fishing charter is easy, with many local operators providing half-day or full-day trips.

These charters are equipped with knowledgeable guides who know the best spots for a successful fishing adventure.

My boyfriend, my brother and my dad all went out on a fishing charter during our last holiday in Rarotonga and they absolutely loved it. They only caught one fish but because it was so big there was enough for all of us!

7. Relax on Muri Beach

Unwind on the sandy shores of Muri Beach, a popular spot for sunbathing, swimming, and watersports. Admire the stunning lagoon views, soak up the sun, and simply relax in this idyllic tropical setting.

If you hang around till the evening then you can explore the Muri Night Markets but tbh they aren’t anything that special, I found the food to be really overpriced so no biggie if you leave this out.

8. Go to the Saturday morning markets

I did really enjoy wandering around the Saturday markets in town and would recommend visiting these if you’re around on the weekends. The smoothie bowls here are delicious and there are stalls with fresh tropical smoothies.

You can’t beat fresh tropical fruit on the islands!!

Day trips from Rarotonga

cook islands aitutaki

Due to being pretty isolated, the only day trip you can really take from Rarotonga is to Aitutaki. This small island is known for its luxury resorts, breathtaking lagoon and incredible white sand beaches, probably some of the most beautiful you have ever seen!

With direct flights from Rarotonga, this picturesque island is pretty easy to get to. It’ll take about 40 minutes to fly there then you’re free to enjoy a day of swimming, snorkelling, and soaking up the sun. If you really want to make the most of your time here, you could stay overnight at a place like Pacific Resort Aitutaki or Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort

I haven’t made it to this incredible island yet but my parents have and they had such incredible things to say about it, it’s definitely on my list for my next visit! If you’re travelling to Rarotonga as a couple for a special occasion I would highly recommend adding Aitutaki to your itinerary.

How many days do you need in Rarotonga?

IMG 0863 2

To fully experience Rarotonga, I would recommend staying anywhere between 7 to 10 days but bump this up to 14 days if you really want to relax and embrace island time.

This allows you enough time to settle in and explore the island’s beautiful beaches, enjoy some water activities such as snorkelling, diving and lagoon cruises, take in the cultural experience and possibly even a trip over to Aitutaki. However, if you’re short on time you could also experience Rarotonga within 5 days and still feel as though you’ve had a nice mini break.

Whenever I’ve visited Rarotonga we’ve stayed for at least 10 days and I find it’s the perfect balance of having plenty of time to relax, shop for souvenirs, and soak up the island’s laid-back vibe before heading home.

Where to stay in Rarotonga

When looking for accommodation in Rarotonga, there are various options to suit different preferences and budgets. For a luxurious stay, consider beachfront resorts like Pacific Resort Rarotonga or The Rarotongan Beach Resort. These properties offer stunning views, upscale amenities, and easy access to the beach.

If you prefer a more intimate setting, Little Polynesian Resort is a boutique resort that is perfect for couples or honeymooners. There are beachfront villas, and an incredible infinity pool and the food served is delicious – I ate some amazing Ika Mata here! Places like the Crown Beach Resort & Spa or the Nautilus Resort are also fabulous. I loved the infinity pool at the Nautilus, the views are incredible.

Additionally, plenty of holiday homes in Rarotonga are available for those looking for a home-away-from-home experience. Whenever I visit with my family, we usually book a holiday home and it’s perfect for cooking your own meals and enjoying each other’s company rather than staying in separate hotel rooms.

Whatever your preference, Rarotonga offers a range of accommodation options to ensure a memorable stay on this beautiful island.

Are there hostels in Rarotonga?

Yes, there are hostels in Rarotonga, such as Rarotonga Backpackers which offers dorm rooms, and single, double and triple rooms for affordable rates.

This hostel has 4 locations around the island so you can pick the best place for you. Perfect for travellers looking for a comfortable stay without breaking the bank.

The hostel also offers transfers to and from Rarotonga airport for $20 NZD per person.

Where to eat in Rarotonga

beluga cafe where to eat in rarotonga

When it comes to the best places to eat in Rarotonga, there are soo many delicious options. Since Rarotonga has boomed in popularity in recent years, there are more and more places popping up.

I really enjoyed all the food we ate on my most recent trip here! Because the fish in Rarotonga is so fresh I ate a lot of seafood on this trip. Ika Mata is an absolute must-try, I could’ve eaten this every day it’s that good! Anything Mahi Mahi is also delicious.

My favourite places to eat

  • Beluga cafe – even if it looks super busy the service is really fast!
  • Deli licious cafe – yummy brunch options
  • Waterline – great for lunch or dinner
  • Castaway Resort – best for dinner and watching the sunset, nice cocktails too so go for happy hour
  • Nautilus – a bit on the fancy side but sooo good
  • Kai Guy food truck – delicious tacos and burritos, great if you want to grab something on the go
  • Vilis Burger Joint – amaaazing fish burger!!
  • Wigmores – if you want a huge burger for the cheapest price then this is you go to. I recommend the fish burger, chicken burger, or the chicken wrap if you need a break from fried food

How to get around Rarotonga

When exploring the picturesque island of Rarotonga, getting around is pretty easy but you’ll most likely need your own mode of transport. There is a local bus but the service is a bit limited as there are only two bus routes on the island, one that goes clockwise and another that goes anti-clockwise. It is a fun and affordable way to get around, however.

But one of the most popular ways to travel around the island is by renting a scooter or a car, allowing you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Another great way to explore the island is by renting a bike.

Additionally, taxis are available for quick and convenient trips around the island, especially useful for late-night returns from dinner or exploring distant attractions. These can get rather expensive though so it can depend on your budget.

Hiring a car in Rarotonga

Car hire in Rarotonga is a convenient and popular choice for travellers and one I would certainly recommend to get the most out of your Rarotonga holiday. It allows you to explore the island at your own pace and create your own itinerary. You have more flexibility when it comes to discovering hidden gems and making spontaneous stops along the way.

There are several rental companies available, so it’s pretty easy to find a vehicle that suits your needs. If you’re visiting during peak season or any time during the New Zealand or Australia school holidays then I would definitely secure a rental car in advance so they don’t book out.

Whenever we hired a rental car, we picked it up and dropped it off at the airport which was always convenient with luggage etc.

Hiring a scooter in Rarotonga

Hiring a scooter in Rarotonga is another fantastic option for exploring this beautiful island. My boyfriend and I hired a scooter on our most recent trip to Rarotonga and it’s definitely my preferred way to travel while on the island!

With the wind in your hair and the freedom to navigate through traffic easily, scooters offer an exciting way to get around and really make you feel like you’re on island time. Just like with car rentals, there are several rental companies to choose from.

Again if you’re visiting in peak season I would recommend booking this in advance. We visited in April so we hired it when we got there and didn’t have any issues but I have heard they can book out. The price was pretty affordable between the two of us and it was a fantastic way to explore the island.

Something to bear in mind is that if you haven’t got a motorbike licence you will need to go sit a short driving test at the local police station to prove that you can drive a scooter before you’re allowed to hire one. Luckily my boyfriend does have a motorbike licence so we didn’t have to go through this process.

What to wear in Rarotonga

When packing for Rarotonga, consider the tropical climate and aim for lightweight, breathable clothing. Opt for comfortable outfits like shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and swimwear.

Don’t forget to pack a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun, you will burn here if you don’t regularly apply sunscreen!

It’s also a good idea to bring some sturdy walking shoes for exploring the island, along with jandals for the beach. Lastly, include a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings just in case. It never gets too cold in Rarotonga but on a breezy evening, you might need a light cover-up.

Package deals to Rarotonga from Auckland

Travellers looking to escape to Rarotonga from Auckland can take advantage of package deals including flights, accommodation, and sometimes even meals or activities. Rarotonga holiday packages are perfect for providing a hassle-free way to experience this stunning destination.

Whether it’s a romantic getaway or a family vacation, package deals can make exploring Rarotonga more accessible and affordable for those departing from Auckland. If you’re travelling from elsewhere in New Zealand, most flights will transit through Auckland anyway so you could either book your domestic flight separately or look for a package that leaves from a city closest to you.

Don’t forget that you’ll need to book travel insurance too!

So where do you find these holiday deals to Rarotonga? I find the best places to look are on the Flight Centre website or search for House of Travel Rarotonga deals. Depending on what time of year you’re looking to book your holiday, it could be worth finding out when the next travel expo is as these always have good deals that are usually worth waiting for!

I love visiting the travel expo, it’s such a fun day out and my bucket list always grows soo much longer.

At just over 67 square kilometres the island isn’t very big.

When deciding between Rarotonga and Fiji for a holiday, it ultimately depends on what you are looking for in your vacation. Rarotonga, part of the Cook Islands, offers a more laid-back and relaxed vibe perfect for those seeking a true island holiday with a slower pace.
